The potter, shell collector, and leaf lover behind Devine Perks Pottery, making nature-inspired functional ceramics by hand on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
My style starts outside. Real shells, leaves, and ferns get pressed into the clay, then glazed in the blues and sea-glass greens of the water I live beside. Functional art that's as happy holding your morning coffee as it is on a shelf.
Devine Perks Pottery honors the memory of my Uncle Steve Hawthorne, the Ohio potter whose wheel I grew up beside, and the reason I found my way back to clay.
How each
piece is made.
It usually starts with a real shell or a leaf pressed into a slab of stoneware. From there it's trimmed, dried, fired, glazed, and fired again — a journey through time, traveling from my hands to yours.
I glaze in small batches, chasing the same coastal blues and sea-glass greens so the pieces feel like family. No two ever come out exactly alike, and that's the whole point.

Some of my favorite hours aren't in my own studio at all. They're spent teaching. I lead hands-on workshops up and down the coast, where total beginners press their first shell into clay and leave with something they made themselves.
It's the part I never saw coming: a whole table of new friends, hands covered in clay, laughing over their lopsided first mugs. Come pull up a chair.
